A coach trip to ancient Stonehenge and beautiful Bath

Stonehenge is a prehistoric stone circle, one of the world's most famous monuments which dates back to about 2300BC, and is a World Heritage Site.

The ground on the Salisbury Plain is composed of earth and chalk. The stones had to be quarried in Wales and brought 300km through forests and over water - before the wheel was invented! This took lots of people a long time. Nobody knows who built it, or why!

Many books have been written about this site, and there are some very feasible new theories. But don't worry - we'll let you into the secret on this great day out!

Bath is another World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful cities in Britain, founded by the Romans when they discovered natural hot water springs. These consisted of near-boiling water bubbling from deep inside the earth. They called it Aquae Sulis and dedicated it to the Goddess Minerva.

After the Romans left, Bath fell into decay and was eventually covered due to the frequent flooding of the river Avon.

The Georgians recreated the city in the 18th century without being aware that the Roman Baths were underneath their city - these were only discovered at the end of last century when some buildings collapsed in the centre of Bath. They found the Roman Baths in almost perfect condition.

During the Georgian period Bath was, for that period, like a Las Vegas! Rich and influential people came from all over Britain and the Empire to 'do the season', 'take the waters' and live it up.
